We all want to have a well functioning heating and air conditioning unit in our homes. Comfort comes with maintaining your system. The following tips are great for helping you do just that.

Every spring you need to make sure your condenser fan’s coils and blades on the fan part are clean. First, turn off the power so that nothing will move as you are working on it. Then, take the grill off, pull the blades out, and gently clean them as well as the unit itself.

In order for your new unit to be as efficient as possible, or to make older units more efficient, make sure it’s put in a shaded area. This will help ensure that the AC is pulling in cooler air, reducing the amount of work it has to do and saving you money.

Have the HVAC system serviced twice per year. This should happen in the fall and the spring. Even if everything seems okay, it doesn’t hurt to check things out.

As the temperature outside drops, remember to turn off your outdoor condenser unit. If you get into temperatures that are less than 60 degrees you need the unit to be shut off so it doesn’t get damaged. This will ensure your system stays in good working order every year, saving you money on costly repairs.

If at all possible, install double-paned windows in your home instead of those with a single pane. Double pane windows can help minimize how much you use your air conditioner in the summer, because they keep cool air inside the home. Likewise, in the winter more hot air stays inside during the cold season.

Install a thermostat you can program to save money on cooling your home. With this device installed, it can help you save money on your energy bills by you having the power to regulate the temperature throughout the day. Furthermore, there are a few programmable thermostats that you can control from your computer or any other web-connected device.

If everyone is out, turn the air conditioner off. The house will heat up when it is turned off, but only a certain amount. Leaving the system on all day will cost a lot of money in terms of electricity.

Don’t let your house get too hot. Air conditioners only cool down a home by 20 degrees. If you have your home at above 100 degrees then you can only get it to about 80 or above. Depending on what the humidity is, this may not be cool enough to be a safe temperature to sleep at when recovering from the harsh summer heat.

Use the techniques presented in the article you have just read. Arriving home to find a broken HVAC system does not feel good. It gets even worse when you think about repair costs. This can be prevented if you follow the tips you have just read. Keep these tips handy at all times so that you can tackle any HVAC issue.
